My Approach ...

Using my background in psychology and coaching to help shape my works, and drawing influence from sources such as Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, Gerhard Richter, Ian Davenport, Rudolf Stingel, Patrick Scott and Zao Wou-Ki, I aim to create contemporary, fresh, vibrant pieces which light up any room. I am driven by postitivity and energised by colour., and my focus is on capturing flow and harmony balanced with his attention to order and precision.

My distinctive small square paintings are the result of a process of developing multiple layers, with elements of each layer protected and other elements washed, rubbed or scratched away, all building a 'history', on each square, each 'positive moment’. The vibrancy and depth of each piece provides you, the viewer, with the opportunity to create your own narrative, or narratives, as you may respond differently at different times. The use of my signature 22 carat goldleaf square and the three dimensional presentation of the squares provides you with that sense of an opportunity, an opportunity to ‘capture that moment’.

Since early 2018, I have been working on developing a new and complimentary new style, which I simply call my 'Stripe paintings'. I wanted to create something that was modern and visually impactful and yet spoke directly to the core inspiration of my work for over ten years now - positivity ...!! In my paintings I aim to capture the different elements that go to create great and positive moments in our lives. I'm really happy with the move towards capturing increased intensity and purity of colour in my work, reflecting the importance of appreciating of each ingredient that goes to make up really great moments. I’m also happy to see the historical Irish wallpaper patterns coming through in my new work. I love the play between old and new, and I’m attracted to the symetry and the repetition of patterns. I see all of this as being consistent with the capturing of, and the celebration of, positive moments, strengths, and the benefit of repeating good things in the search for excellence.

I've had four solo shows to date and my work has been shown internationally in cities around the world including Milan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Stockholm, Edinburgh, a number of times in London, at SOFA Chicago and twice in New York City.  My art is in Irish Government national and regional collections, corporate collections, and internationally in collections such as the Montefiore Fine Art Collection, New York.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the following people for their support in helping to create different aspects of the work I am currently creating:

  • David Skinner - Wallpaper in Ireland 1700 - 1900, Churchill House Press, 2014
  • Ian Crawford - Stitch It Brand It, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin
  • Brede & Grace MacNally and David Duffy, MacNally Joinery Ltd., Lusk, Co. Dublin
  • Fergal Walsh, Print Solutions, Western Industrial Estate, Dublin 12
  • Ger Boylan, The Picture Framing Place, Skerries, Co. Dublin
  • Dan Heath, The Power of Moments, Chip & Dan Heath, Random House, 2017
  • Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Co. Monaghan & Meath County Council

Please take a few minutes to browse the pieces here on the site, and create your own narratives. Let your mind take you on a journey and tap into, or recharge, your own reserves of positivity ...!!

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me in relation to any piece you see or any ideas you may have for a special commission.

and finally ...

I was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1965 but grew up in Mullingar. Life has taken me to fascinating parts of the world and I'm now living in the village of Stamullen, Co. Meath, with Cécile, Antoine, Clodagh and Tristan.

You will see from my LinkedIn profile that I have built, and continue to build on, nearly 30 years of occupational psychology and public service HR experience in Ireland and the UK. Over the last number of years executive coaching has captured my passion and energy and I get huge satisfaction from working closely with managers and executives to help them reach their potential and move towards achieving real personal fulfilment.
